About

From the lab bench to the launch screen.

I've spent my career at the intersection of technology and human wellbeing — from HIV research in the lab to helping health tech teams design AI-powered mobile experiences users actually stick with.

The story.

Most people in mobile consulting followed a straight line from CS degree to startup to agency. My path was different.

I started in biotechnology — developing assays and cutting-edge technologies around HIV research. I earned my BS in Microbiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, then completed a Master's in Molecular Biology at Chicago State University, where my thesis focused on gene therapy for treating lung carcinoma.

From the lab, I moved into bioinformatics, building information systems that helped researchers make sense of complex data. That's where I discovered a truth that has shaped my entire career: the way people interact with data matters as much as the data itself.

I founded Anaara in 2000 and haven't looked back. Over 26 years, I've navigated every major platform shift — from early web development to Flash, from the first iPhone SDK to Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. Each shift was an opportunity to go deep, master the craft, and ship work that reached millions of people.

What I've built.

Enterprise & Government

US Department of Energy

Led Anaara's team as principal front-end architect behind the Recovery Dashboard — a data visualization platform providing unprecedented transparency into the nationwide flow of billions in stimulus funding. Orchestrated a 10+ member multi-disciplinary team delivering releases every 2–4 weeks.

Airport FIDS Systems

At Dulles, Phoenix Sky Harbor, and airports across the nation and overseas, the flight information display systems are powered by technology I built. Featured in the book New Masters of Flash: Volume 3.

Federal Reserve Board

Spearheaded development of an innovative Augmented Reality app designed to educate children about U.S. currency notes — seamlessly integrating 2D and 3D game interactions.

Drug Enforcement Administration

Built cutting-edge native iOS and Android applications for mission-critical operations, including an iPad recruitment tool leveraging handwriting recognition and Apple Pencil integration with resilient offline sync.

Health & Fitness

Envolve PeopleCare

Led mobile teams across iOS and Android, revolutionizing their digital health platform. Rewrote hybrid Ionic app as native iOS in Swift, integrated HealthKit, CoreData, and Validic APIs to build LiveHealthier into a secure, HIPAA-compliant mHealth application.

iFit (NordicTrack / ProForm)

Led a groundbreaking initiative to rewrite the Android tablet app from scratch using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, replacing a Xamarin-based app that suffered from severe performance issues. Delivered unparalleled performance and reliability.

Abbott Laboratories

Revitalized the legacy "OneView" iOS app, modernizing the Objective-C codebase while integrating data visualization components — contributing to Abbott's mission of delivering cutting-edge healthcare solutions through mobile.

Telematics & Fintech

Octo Telematics — Director of Mobile

Inherited legacy apps plagued by technical debt and poor ratings. Reversed the decline to five-star ratings on both stores. Recruited and mentored 20+ developers, pioneered GoPro integration through reverse engineering and BLE/WiFi.

T. Rowe Price — Android Lead

Sole team lead for three Android development teams, leading the modernization from legacy Java to modular Kotlin using Compose, MVI, Flows, and Clean Architecture.

Teaching & writing.

I don't just build — I teach. I've authored or co-authored 9+ books on Android development and Kotlin, published through Kodeco. Thousands of developers worldwide have learned mobile development through my work.

Beyond books, I've been an Adjunct Professor at Howard Community College since 2017, teaching Mobile Design & Development. I previously taught at ITT Tech, Prince George's Community College, and Moraine Valley Community College — spanning subjects from multimedia design to microbiology.

I mentor because I remember what it was like to learn.

"Fuad always seemed to know exactly what I needed to get to the next level. He would challenge and push me; however, he would never overwhelm me."

Beyond the code.

Compassion, excellence, and self-improvement are the values that drive me. I'm a cyclist with Team Velocipede, a martial artist who has studied Iaido under Doshu Shiro Shintaku since 2011, and a photographer who has been the official event photographer at numerous mobile tech conferences.

I believe in approaching technology — and life — with a martial artist's discipline: attention to detail, continuous refinement, and deep respect for the craft.
